Watercolour page for A Vintage Journey

Hello lovely visitors! Today sees the start of a new challenge at A Vintage Journey and the lovely and talented Amanda has chosen Watercolours for her theme. Well the obvious choice for me was to make another page for my Nature Journal, so here it is:
I worked on 300 gms hotpress watercolour paper and started by stamping my image in Sepia Archival and then heatembossing it with clear powder.
The next step was to add some texture with one of Tim Holtz's layering stencil and texture paste. When that had dried it was time to start with the watercolours. I used Daniel Smith brand colours in  Quin. Deep Gold, Burnt Sienna and Raw Sienna first of all.
Next more drama was added with some Payne's Grey. In this brand the colour is almost black, so I had to go carefully.
Time to add some different effects, so I pulled out my Oxide inks and added some further layers, using mostly Antique Linen, Wild Honey and a little Peackock Feathers to add a Patina Effect over the raised bits.
I deepened the effect with going over it again in a Peackock Feather Distress Crayon and also added a tiny bit of Treasure Gold to add some shimmer.
Time to colour te butterfly, - I used water colour pencils in matching colours for that.
I added a few embellishments to finish it all off...
I added a bit of shadow here and there and that was pretty much it

Now all I had to do was to glue it into my Nature Journal and I was done.
I hope you will pop over to the Vintage Journey Blog, to see the amazing projects my teamies have created, - watercolour inspiration galore. We also have a wonderful sponsor this month, Craft Obsessions, so do head over to get all the details, and of course we all hope that you will decide to play along with us this month! Meanwhile, thanks for dropping by here like useual and stay creative!
xxxxx

Oh, my goodness, Astrid! You have created a new favorite for me! You had me sold at that texture at the bottom! I love the way the water colors collect around the flourishes, and then bam, you add the patina (so rich!) and shimmer! Oh, my, how pretty this is! Of course, then, so is that amazing butterfly! Well done on creating Heaven in watercolor! Can you tell I love it? Hugs!

Oh Astrid, I love this so much! That butterfly is one of my favourite stamps (not used nearly enough!) and the colours you chose are gorgeous. I love the patina effect that you achieved at the bottom and you mirrored it so beautifully in the striking butterfly. This is a truly beautiful addition to your Nature Journal! Hugs, Anne xx

The colours here made me go "ooohh" even before I knew they were Daniel Smith! Love the heat of the warms and the cool of the blues, a contrast which makes this such a satisfying page. Gorgeous butterfly and the textured flourishes are luscious, as is that wonderful altered plaque. Beautiful work, as always!

Stunning page and fantastic step by step as well. I just love the effects of the watercolour combined with the oxides. I think you just sold me on the Oxides, I've been resisting them. Take good care, Shirleyxx

Rich colours and beautiful textures make this pop right off the page. I enjoyed following along with the step by step and learned a new technique. i.e. the heat embossed image before adding water colour. You can be sure I will be trying this tonight. Beautiful work and thanks for the inspiration.

So beautiful Astrid, I adore the textured flourishes at the bottom of the page and how they have captured and concentrated the colours from your watercolour washes and it's fascinating how the colour of the original stamping has softened and aged with the washes, what a wonderful effect! Thanks so much for sharing your beautiful page, Deb xo

Just got a whole lot of new stamps from a brilliant place called the Stamp Smith. This is the image that I first saw on Docraft and really liked. I asked the friend who has used it in an ATC, where she got it. Well she borrowed it from a friend who got it from ebay as a one off. But.... it had a title. I googled the title, and hey presto found the site. They have great stamps and offer a really friendly fast service. I highly recommend them!
